Copenhagen

I visited Denmark for a conference. It was in Copenhagen but flights to Aalborg were much cheaper. So I flew there and got a train to the capital, where I spent a week learning about cosmic dust.

With my work done, I set out for a journey back across Denmark. I would start with a bus to Sjaellands Odde, on the northeast of Zealand. It went from just outside Copenhagen station.

Ferry to Aarhus

Saturday June 16th 2018

I was tired after a long week of conference, and I slept most of the way on the bus. It seemed that this was not a touristy way to travel - I couldn't see anyone else who looked non-local on the bus, and the driver only spoke Danish. At Sjaellands Odde we got on the boat for the hour long journey across to Aarhus. I got a phenomenally expensive coffee and then stood out on the deck. It had been hot and sunny all week in Copenhagen but it was spitting with rain here.

Having not understood the Danish instructions when we boarded the ferry, I came within seconds of missing the bus as we docked. Luckily I caught it before it drove off into the distance with my backpack still on board, and got dropped off in Aarhus soon after.

Aarhus

It was pretty grim in Aarhus. I planned only to have a wander around, grab a coffee and then head on to Aalborg. There was plenty of wandering to do in the old town. I sheltered from heavy rain in a coffee shop for a while.

It suddenly got quite quiet in the coffee shop. Then when I went outside to head back to the station, it was way quieter than it had been when I came in. As I passed a pub and heard some cheering, I realised why - Denmark were playing Peru in the world cup. I'd have stopped to watch, but I had a train to catch before full time.

Train to Aalborg

Saturday June 16th 2018

The train from Aalborg to Copenhagen had been absolutely packed and I was lucky to get a seat. But this week, everything was much quieter and I had a carriage almost to myself, for the two hour ride up to Aalborg. Heavy downpours punctuated the journey, in between stretches of less bleak grey skies.

Midnight in Aalborg

Saturday June 16th 2018

I got to Aalborg quite late, and went out for a walk at midnight. Aalborg is at a good latitude - just a few days from midsummer, the sky was nowhere near fully dark, staying a really deep beautiful blue throughout the short night.

Aalborg

In the morning it was sunny and fresh. I missed a bus I wanted to catch to the airport and thought for a moment I would need to get a taxi. It was a short ride but this was Denmark and I thought I'd need to call relatives for emergency loans. But luckily there was another bus. I caught it outside Aalborg station and headed home.
